Scripture Reading: Philippians 3:17; 1 Corinthians 11:1; 1 Thessalonians 1:5b-8a
Philippians 3:17 – 17Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.
1 Corinthians 11:1 – 1Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
1 Thessalonians 1:5b – You know how we lived among you for your sake. 6You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. 7And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. 8The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere.
Questions for Reflection:
When you read Philippians 3:17 does it seem arrogant for Paul to instruct the church to follow his example? At first glance it might. However, if you read more of Paul’s writings, you realize that he is calling them to follow another’s example. Whose example did Paul follow?
It’s hard at times to go from where you are to where you need to be without an example or an illustration. Imagine how tough it would be to teach a mathematical concept without demonstrating how to do it. There is a reason that most textbooks give examples for students. They need something to follow. Paul encouraged the church to follow his example as he followed Jesus. Who in your life can you look to as an example to follow when it comes to your spiritual life? What about that person makes you think that? Take time today to let them know the example they are setting for you. Encourage them in their faith as they follow the example of Christ. Let them know the impact they have had on your life.
