Scripture Reading: Philippians 1:12-14
12Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. 13As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guardand to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 14And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.
Questions for Reflection:
Paul was writing to the church at Philippi from prison. He was writing to let them know that he way okay. However beyond okay, Paul was joyful because of what had happened in light of his imprisonment. What had happened as a result of Paul’s imprisonment? The word “actually” in verse 12 can also be translated “really” or “rather.” Paul is surprised by what has happened and he expects the Philippians to be shocked as well. Paul then gives two specific examples of how the gospel is advancing. What are those examples?
Paul says that because of his chains others are speaking more courageously and fearlessly. Doesn’t this seem counter-intuitive? Wouldn’t it reason that in times of persecution that others might shy away from talking about God? Why do you think this is? In spite of Paul’s chains, the gospel advanced. What “chains” in your life might God use today to advance His message?
