Scripture Reading: 1 Thessalonians 3:1-3a
1So when we could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens. 2We sent Timothy, who is our brother and co-worker in God’s service in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, 3so that no one would be unsettled by these trials.
Questions for Reflection:
Paul ends chapter 2 by explaining how he desperately had wanted to visit and care for the Thessalonians. When the path for Paul’s personal return seemed blocked, what did he do instead? How does Paul describe Timothy to them in verse 2? It certainly would have been Paul’s preference to have Timothy with him. Timothy was his valuable aide, the Robin to his Batman.  Paul chose what was best for the church instead of choosing his own personal comfort.
What was Timothy’s mission in returning to the Thessalonians? In the midst of their trials, Paul was concerned that they would drift from their faith. Part of being in Christian community is allowing others to strengthen and encourage you. Who is someone that has played a significant role in your life by encouraging you? Who can you encourage or build up today?
