Scripture Reading: Ecclesiastes 3:10-14
10I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. 11He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God. 14I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him.
Questions for Reflection:
Why do stories like The Matrix, The Chronicles of Narnia and even The Lego Movie resonate with us? What is it within these stories that makes our hearts leap with joy? I believe that within these stories (and many others) is a wonderful picture that mirrors the Gospel message. Solomon in writing the book of Ecclesiastes says that God has “set eternity in the human heart.” There is a longing within us for God and His story.
Think through some current movies you’ve seen, books you’ve read, etc. Can you see ways in which the Gospel shows up in those stories? At One Life, we value cultural communication because we believe we need to tell the timeless story of Jesus in the language of our culture. How can you use those movies, books, etc to explain who God is and what He has done for us to someone who is far from God? Look for opportunities to do that in the week ahead.
