Jesus is Faithful, so we can Hope in His Success

Dan Sullivan   -

1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) 5 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6 but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

Hebrews 3:1–6
Hebrews is written to people that valued Moses and the Law, so there is no convincing needed there. The thing that the writer is trying to do, in the first few chapters, is to help them see the value of Jesus as far superior to Moses. In this example, Jesus and Moses are both compared to builders. The building that they are building is the kingdom of God.
The encouraging thing in the middle of this is really not the point of this section, but it offers encouragement to us. Jesus is building the house. We build up people, and we build up our faith, but the ultimate act of building is being done by the most faithful worker of all: the Son of God.
Jesus told the disciples “I will build my church,” and we can be confident that He will complete the job. You can look over the history of the church and see setbacks, persecutions, trials, and then subsequent victories and expansions. The underground church in China, the growth of churches in prisons in America, and the stories of miracles and mass conversions from refugee camps in the middle east all point to Jesus’ work.
He is building His church like the job title He has in Hebrews 3:1 “The apostle and high priest of our confession” He is the apostle, or sent one, because He goes out with the message. A man walks out into a corn field to shoot himself, sees a Gospel pamphlet blown there by the wind, and becomes an evangelist because Jesus is going out with His message.
Jesus is the High Priest, the one between man and God, because He is the sacrifice and forgiver of our sins. Now moms and dads can come before God in prayer and Jesus will answer them. Lost kids are found and relationships are healed because Jesus is standing before God on our behalf.
He is faithful, and we can boast in that hope knowing that it will be fulfilled in Him completely someday.
