[34] But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. [35] And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. [36] “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” [37] And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. [38] This is the great and first commandment. [39] And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. [40] On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 22:34–40 ESV
When they were asking Jesus about the “greatest commandment,” they were looking for ways to pigeon-hole Him into a position like people try to label Baptists or Catholics or Lutherans. They were asking “which of God’s laws do you focus on the most?” Jesus, of course, brought them out of controversy into real and practical truth.
God gives us people in order to love Him. The apostle John would ask later if we can’t love our neighbor we see, how can we love God who we can’t see? Every person that God brings or allows into our path is there to receive love from us in order to show off the love of God.
In Matthew 25 Jesus will say “whatever you’ve done to the least of these you’ve done to me.” As you go about your day, how would viewing people as if they are Christ affect how you treat them? Have I loved people well? Have I seen people as an inconvenience to my agenda? God puts people in your path that He wants you to love. The more He wants to show off, the more chances you will have!
