Canning the Psalms for Winter

Dan Sullivan   -

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.

I knew an old pastor once that seemed to have the whole Bible memorized. He even knew the chapter and verse address of the scriptures he would quote. One time I was sitting there as he was giving some counsel to a person going through a hard time and he quoted some Psalms. They asked him, “How do you have so many Bible verses memorized?!” He said, “Every time I go through something hard, I turn to the Bible and might read one verse over and over. I guess I’ve been through a lot of hard things!”
The time to build up your faith and build your trust in the Lord is before the hard things happen. Yes, people grow in their faith when they go through struggles, but how much better it is to build up your trust in the Lord before those times.
If you read through some of these Psalms and think, “this is all people being miserable!” or even “this doesn’t apply to me at all!” then praise the Lord and dive in deeper. There are people around us that need to hear that God is a refuge. There are times that may come when we need to know with certainty that God won’t let His people fall.
Jesus said that a wise man brings out old and new treasures from the store room. Some of those old treasures are Psalms that didn’t seem to apply one year but fit perfectly the next.
