Jesus answered her, “If you had known the gift of God and who it is who said to you, ‘Give me some water to drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
“Sir,” the woman said to him, “you have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do you get this living water? Surely you’re not greater than our ancestor Jacob, are you? For he gave us this well and drank from it himself, along with his sons and his livestock.”
Jesus replied, “Everyone who drinks some of this water will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks some of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again, but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life.”
One time I was riding in a real SUV (like you see the UN drive) along the side of a mountain. The driver spoke no English, and we were alone on our way to a village to take pictures of a delivery of dental supplies and other first aid goodies. He pulled over in the middle of no where and motioned for me to follow him behind a giant boulder by the side of the road.
I was nervous. I barely knew this guy and we were in the middle. of. nowhere.
He disappeared behind the boulder and I figured I had nothing better to do, so I followed him. Behind the big rock, about as big as a little Evansville shotgun house, the guy had his water bottle out and was refilling it with water that was shooting straight up out of the ground like a fountain on main street. I was shocked. Where did this come from? How did you know about this? Is it safe?
I put my hand in the water and it was just as I imagined: pure glacier melt from 100 miles away. In the 98 degree sunshine, this 40 degree water was like LIFE.
We filled our bottles, washed our faces, and laughed pretty hard. Apparently every kid that has grown up in these cliffs knows about it and they don't tell outsiders. I drank deeply until I got a brain freeze. It was ice-cold, pure water spraying right out of the earth.
Whenever I read this section, I think about that. We were not sparing and didn't care how much we spilled all over the rocks. The water never stopped. When the Holy Spirit lives in a person, it's like this. We have mercy and grace and joy and hope and peace like it's bursting out of an infinite well. We drink deeply and we share freely.
When we know it is Jesus we are talking to, let's ask Him to give us that water. He loves to give it, and He's excited for us to share it.
